Detailed Itinerary: Marrakech to Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour

⇒ 1st Day: Marrakesh » Tizi N’Tichka » Ait Ben Haddou » Skoura » Dades Gorge (313km)

In the morning you’ll meet your driver/guide, and then depart for Ait Ben Haddou over Morocco’s highest pass, Tizi N’Tichka (2260m altitude). Marvel at the wonderful scenery of the High Atlas Mountains and appreciate the remarkable Berber villages before you get to Ait Ben haddou kasbah. On the other hand, it is one of Morocco’s most iconic sites and a stunningly well-preserved medieval village which has famously featured in many blockbuster movies, including the one who wants to be the king, Babel, the kingdom of heaven, Prince of Persia…etc.

It was built by the last Berber chieftain El Glaoui Et-Hami in the late 19th century; it’s now a UNESCO matrimonial historical site. Lunch might be taken near the kasbah before making your lovely way into the Sahara with a medley of palm trees, magnificent canyons of Dades and rose fields in Kalaat M’gouna, where roses bloom in profusion in springtime. Besides, there is a possibility of stopping in Skoura before continuing to your hotel, home to several privately owned kasbahs, including the Kasbah Ameridhl, with its extravagant decorations and mud-brick fortifications. Later on, check into your hotel in the magnificent canyon of Boumalne dades.

⇒ 2nd Day: Dades Valley » Todra Gorge » Tinejdad » Merzouga Desert » Camel Trekking (250km)

After breakfast, drive a bit further to Tissadrine to the beautiful panoramic view of the Dades valley, and then the beautiful rocks’ formation called «Monkey fingers». Afterward, depart Boumlane dades and set off on the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the gorge of Todra. Surrounded by towering vertical limestone cliffs reaching heights of 300m, it is known as Morocco’s Grand Canyon. Moreover, the charm of Todra lies in its changing colors as the sun slowly moves from east to west. There’ll be time to marvel at this sight before you continue your journey to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. Next, stop for lunch in the village of Tinejdad.

As soon as you arrive at the popular dunes of Erg Chebbi, one of the world’s iconic landscapes, with towering dunes up to 150m in height, ride a camel through the desert towards your campsite. A spectacular camp hidden away in the sand dunes of the Sahara. Here in this magical escape from the modern world you’ll experience the true essence of desert life. Make sure to catch the sunset in the heart of the desert. In addition to that, enjoy a nice dinner, followed by live Berber music around an open fire and spend an amazing night under the stars, digest the desert in all its beauty that will give you remarkable memories of the desert trip exploring.

⇒ 3rd Day: Merzouga » Alnif » Agdez » Ouarzazate » Marrakech (556km)

Leave Merzouga after breakfast and drive back to Marrakech. Enjoy a scenic drive towards the Draa Valley through Alnif, Tazarine oasis, and N’kob with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the panoramic views of the ancient kasbahs and palm groves (lush valleys with palm trees, fields and acacia), as well as the mountains of the anti-atlas (1660m high). Free time to enjoy your lunch at your convenience, later we hit the road again to the Hollywood of North Africa – Ouarzazate, famous for being the filming location for many other Hollywood blockbusters and famous TV shows including «Gladiator», «Jewel of the Nile». Then continue onwards with great views over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.

⇒ INTRODUCTION OF THE DESERT ITINERARY:

Morocco Sahara Tour departs either from Marrakech or Fez, and includes a night on the half route in the Sahara Desert (1 night or 2 nights) and end wherever you want, Fez or Marrakesh. Furthermore, the total distance from Marrakech back to Marrakech is 1124 kilometers and for Marrakech to Fez is 1033 kilometers.

  • 2 Day Morocco Desert Tour: Spend overnight in Merzouga Desert, however you might not be able to see the sunset, starry sky and the sunrise due to 14 hours’ drive and the weather conditions sometimes.
  • 3 Day Morocco Desert Tour: (depending on the starting point “Fez or Marrakech”) The first night will be spent in Dades Canyon (half way) in order to see more and break up the long journey. The Next night is in the desert. Although you might not be able to see the Erg Chebbi dunes till 5 pm, So for a 3-day tour, there is only one night in the desert for about 14 hours, arranged to stay in a desert camp, If the weather is good, you can see the sunset, starry sky and an amazing sunrise as well.

⇒ DISADVANTAGES OF THE 2 DAY ITINERARY:

  1. Few stops, fewer opportunities to take photos, not enough time to enjoy the sunset as the arrival will be late in the afternoon, however plenty of time to watch the starry sky, and sunrise (depending on weather conditions), departure will be earlier on the following day.

⇒ DISADVANTAGES OF THE 3 DAY ITINERARY:

  1. Round tour of 14 hours, there is only one opportunity to watch the sunset, starry sky, and sunrise almost the same as the 2-day tour. If the weather is cloudy, you will miss it.
  2. There are at least 7 hours of sleep out of 14 hours, 4-5 hours of daylight and the rest of the time is night. As well as short breaks to wander around the kasbahs, Canyons and photos.

⇒ ADVANTAGES OF THE 4 DAY ITINERARY:

  1. The 4-day desert tour allows you to spend a full 24 hours in the desert and have plenty of time to experience the Sahara Desert in depth and comfort.
  2. If the weather is cloudy on the first day, then no worries since there’s one more day left to catch the sunset, starry sky and also sunrise.
  3. The 4-day desert tour includes 2 nights in the Sahara Desert. We will arrange one night in the desert camp and the 2nd night in a Riad/Hotel, if you wish to spend two nights in the camp, please do let us know your preferred option at the time of booking.
  4. Experience the culture and lifestyle of the nomadic Berbers in the desert for more than 24 hours and free time to relax and take photos of the dunes, Sand-Board, Camel ride, Dune Buggy or Quad Bike.

⇒ SUMMER HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENT:

  • Due to the temperature from June to mid-August. About 37-44 degrees C, only 3 days/ 2 nights of desert tours will be arranged during this period (Recommended)

To get your booking confirmed for the 3 days Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour, a deposit is required and can be done easily and securely over PayPal. Had a Great Merzouga Desert Tour from Marrakech with MTT

We booked 3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga desert. While driving to the Sahara through Atlas we really enjoyed the beautiful scenery and Berber music played by our guide and also of course the camel ride which was an amazing experience. In addition to that, we had an unforgettable time in the desert. Likewise, dancing and singing along to Berber instruments were amazing. Besides, the accommodation we stayed in Dades and Merzouga was very nice, and we were moved by their hospitality. Thanks to our guide, Hmad, we learned a lot about Morocco and also Berbers.
